LEADERSHIP + OWNERSHIPBUSINESS STRATEGY + PLANNING

Owning a small business is something to be proud of-you are in charge of every decision, and you have worked hard to get to where you are today. But let’s be honest: being “the boss” doesn’t mean you know it all. You started your business because you are an expert in your industry, trade, etc-but are you an expert in marketing? In HR? In customer retention? The truth is, sometimes the best thing you can do for your business is to admit where you aren't the expert, and get the training or help your business needs in those areas. That’s not weakness—it’s wisdom, and your team and customers will notice the difference.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

Here’s a reality check: only about 1 in 5 small business owners have formal marketing experience. Even fewer—less than 15%—have a background in leadership or HR. Most owners are experts at their craft, but not experts in every skill a business needs to thrive. So you aren't alone! And while Google or AI can answer a lot, it can’t replace experience when it comes to making decisions that shape your business’s future in the areas that aren't your forte.

Experience + data Matters

Over the years, I’ve watched owners of small businesses make big decisions based on opinions or “how we’ve always done it.” I've seen owners make business strategy decisions based on what they think vs looking into the actual data-and then they have to pivot (a little embarrassed) when that strategy didn't work and cost them money. I have also seen owners lose really amazing employees simply because they led with ego instead of seeking guidance--and we all know how expensive and difficult it can be to find great employees. Morale of the story: Sometimes leading your business with your gut works, but too often it leads to missed growth opportunities, problems that could have been prevented, and lost customers/employees. The best leaders I’ve seen are the ones who gather information, keep learning, and are honest enough to admit when they need support.

You Don’t Have to Go It Alone

You don’t have to wear every hat (and honestly, you shouldn’t). Smart business owners know when to bring in backup, and how to delegate for the areas of their business that they aren't the expert in.

And it doesn't have to come with a hefty price tag.

It might not make sense for your small business to hire a marketing agency, and your budget may not have room for a full time Human Resources manager. But support doesn't have to be pricey or something you have to be locked into with a contract.

Online education is incredible, but sometimes small businesses need support that is customized to their unique needs. That's where the countless agencies and B2B companies come in, and where some of those price tags start adding up.

Of course, there is another option (and yes, this is a shameless plug).
